Haiti is a Caribbean country that shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic to its east. Though it’s still recovering from a 2010 earthquake, many of Haiti's landmarks dating to the early 19th century remain intact. These include Citadelle la Ferrière, a mountaintop fortress, and the nearby ruins of Sans-Souci Palace, the baroque former royal home of King Henry I.

Haiti has a generally hot and humid tropical climate. The north wind brings fog and drizzle, which interrupt Haiti's dry season from November to January. But during February through May, the weather is very wet. Northeast trade winds bring rains during the wet season.

Shopping

The best things to buy in Haiti are the local handicrafts, such as seed jewelry, straw hats and wooden carvings. Many of these can be found in the Iron Market in Port-au-Prince, the largest market in Haiti where you can barter. A particularly precious item you could take home with you is a knife painting, an oil painting created.
