Angola is a southern African nation whose varied terrain encompasses tropical Atlantic beaches, a labyrinthine system of rivers and sub-Saharan dessert that extends across the border into Namibia. The Country's colonial history is reflected in it's Portuguese-influenced cuisine and it's landmarks including Fortaleza de sao Miguel, a fortress built by the Portuguese in 1576 to defend the capital, Luanda.
Like the rest of tropical Africa, Angola experiences distinct, alternating rainy and dry seasons. The coastal strip is tempered by the cool Benguela Current, resulting in a climate similar to coastal Peru or Baja California. It is semiarid in the South and along the coast to Luanda.
